Smeg refrigerator design and construction
Many single-door FAB models cool the fresh-food section with an evaporator hidden in the rear wall. Frost forms on that wall while the compressor runs and melts off while it rests, trickling down a groove into a small drain hole and out to a pan above the compressor, where it evaporates. Bits of food plug that hole, and then water collects under the crisper drawers. Some versions include a small inner freezer compartment that needs manual defrosting, and when ice gets thick in there, cooling suffers. The FAB door's gasket holds the magnet that keeps the curved door closed, so once it wears, warm, humid air gets in, and in a Florida kitchen that means more frost and more meltwater. On larger models, thermostats, fans and electronic controls round out the list.
