Maytag refrigerator design and construction
Since the buyout, Maytag refrigerators have been Whirlpool designs, so the ice maker, fill valve, fans and defrost parts in yours usually match a Whirlpool from the same years. The PowerCold button only makes the compressor and fans work harder for a while; it does nothing for a box that is warm because the evaporator is buried in frost. In a humid kitchen, a door seal that has gone flat lets damp air leak in, and that shows up as sweating on the cabinet edge and faster frost on the coil. The coils under the cabinet gather dust and pet fur, and a refrigerator parked in a hot garage leans on them even harder. Older Maytag-era units, many built at the Amana plant in Iowa, get a parts check before we promise anything.

Often it is a door gasket that has flattened or torn and lets humid air seep in. On some models a heater in the cabinet frame keeps that edge dry, and if it fails, the area sweats. We check the seal and the mullion heater circuit.
Not if something has failed. It just runs the system harder for a set time. Frost blocking the evaporator or a stopped fan will keep the fresh-food side warm until that cause is repaired.
