Whirlpool refrigerator design and construction
A Whirlpool refrigerator that's losing its cold usually has a frost problem, not a compressor problem. On top-freezer and side-by-side models, the defrost circuit melts frost off the coil a few times a day; when its heater, its bimetal thermostat or the timer or board that triggers it fails, ice builds until air stops moving. The odd result is a freezer that seems fine and a fresh-food side that climbs into the fifties, because that side depends on air pushed through the frozen coil. French-door models add an ice maker, sometimes in the fresh-food compartment with its own small fan, plus a dispenser fed by a solenoid valve and filter head. Many Whirlpools pull air across a condenser under the cabinet, and lint and pet hair there make everything run longer in a warm Tampa kitchen.

Classic defrost trouble. Frost has sealed the coil, so the freezer side still gets some cold while the fresh-food side starves. We test the defrost heater, its thermostat and the control that schedules it, plus the fan that moves the air.
Look up the ambient range for your model. A shut garage in August gets far hotter than a kitchen, and the fridge will run nonstop and may fall behind. Clean coils and room around it help, but some models simply aren't built for it.
