Iowa roots, Whirlpool ownership
Amana takes its name from the Amana Colonies, a cluster of Iowa villages where the business started out in the 1930s building refrigeration equipment. Raytheon took it over in 1965, and in 1967 Amana launched the countertop Radarange, one of the earliest microwaves meant for home kitchens. Goodman Global owned it briefly, Maytag bought the appliance line in 2002, and Whirlpool absorbed Maytag in 2006.
Amana is now Whirlpool's entry-level badge. Amana air conditioners and furnaces are a different business that uses the name under license and belongs to Goodman, part of Daikin, so the condensing unit beside your house has nothing in common with the washer in your garage.
Rentals, garages and quick replacements
Amanas are bought for price and availability, so they turn up wherever an appliance had to be replaced fast or cheaply: student rentals near USF, duplexes and small apartment buildings, investor-owned houses in Riverview and Brandon, and rentals leased to military families near MacDill. Property managers looking after several units see a lot of them.
Many Amana laundry pairs and second refrigerators live in attached garages. Summer heat out there is hard on a refrigerator and makes a dryer's vent problems worse, so the location is part of the diagnosis, not an afterthought.
Simple machines, honest math
Current Amana laundry is built on Whirlpool platforms, and the kitchen appliances carry Whirlpool components as well. Failures are well known, parts are plentiful and diagnosis is quick, and the dial controls on many models leave fewer expensive boards to go wrong.
The catch is value. A belt, fuse, valve, igniter or switch is an easy yes. Refrigerant work, a washer transmission or the main board in an older machine is a different story: buying a new Amana can come out cheaper than the repair, and you will hear that from us.

- Refrigerators: Top-freezer, bottom-freezer and side-by-side models on Whirlpool platforms. Defrost components, evaporator fans, start relays, ice makers and door gaskets lead the work.
- Washers: Top-load agitator washers, many with plain dial controls, and a few front-loaders. Lid switches and locks, drain pumps, couplers, shifters and agitator dogs come up most.
- Dryers: Gas and electric 29-inch dryers on Whirlpool's long-lived design. Thermal fuses, elements, igniters, valve coils, belts, idlers and drum rollers make up the routine work.
- Dishwashers: Entry-level built-in dishwashers using Whirlpool components. Clogged filters, drain pumps, inlet valves, latches and float switches generate most calls.
- Ovens: The oven half of Amana gas and electric ranges. Elements, glow-bar igniters, temperature sensors and thermostats account for most repairs.
- Microwaves: Countertop and over-the-range microwaves. Interlock switches, high-voltage diodes, magnetrons, turntable motors and hood fans are what usually fail.
- Freezers: Amana refrigerator freezer sections and standalone chest or upright freezers. Relays, defrost components, thermostats and gaskets are the typical failures.
- Cooktops: The cooking surfaces of Amana ranges: coil electric, radiant glass and gas. Burned receptacles, worn infinite switches, dead elements, igniters and spark switches are the common faults.
- Stoves: Plain freestanding Amana stoves, gas or electric, found in countless rental kitchens. Most visits involve a coil receptacle, an oven igniter, a bake element or burner ignition.
- Ranges: Freestanding Amana ranges with self-clean and electronic controls. Boards, temperature sensors, igniters, elements and self-clean locks account for most visits.
