Which Manitowoc Appliance Needs Work?
How the ownership changed
The brand takes its name from Manitowoc, Wisconsin, where the ice business is still headquartered. For years it sat inside Welbilt. When Ali Group agreed to acquire Welbilt, competition regulators required the ice machine business to be split off, and Pentair completed its purchase in 2022. Nothing about the badge on the machine changed.
Current products include the Indigo NXT modular heads, NEO undercounter units, QuietQube remotes whose compressor and condenser live outside the building, and flake and nugget machines. Around Tampa Bay you'll find them behind bars, in restaurant kitchens and hotel service corridors, and in hospital and school cafeterias.
Heat, scale and cleaning
Ice machines suffer in hot rooms. An air-cooled head in a cramped back bar or a kitchen without much ventilation has to dump heat into air that's already warm, and production falls off sharply in summer. Remote QuietQube condensing units sit outdoors or on a roof, and near the bay salt air works on their coil fins.
Mineral scale and biofilm are the other enemies. They coat the freezing plate, block the holes in the distribution tube and foul the probes, and the machine starts producing slowly or harvesting badly. Use the machine's own clean cycle with Manitowoc-approved cleaner and sanitizer at the stated interval, swap water filters on time and brush the condenser. LuminIce, where installed, helps keep growth down but doesn't stand in for cleaning.
