Maytag microwave design and construction
A Maytag over-the-range microwave is two appliances in one box: the oven itself and an exhaust hood with a separate blower and lamps. If the plate spins and the light is on yet the coffee comes out lukewarm, the high-voltage parts are the suspects: magnetron, diode, capacitor and transformer. Its capacitor stores enough energy to be dangerous even with the cord out, so we drain it first. A unit that is completely dead, or that trips power the moment you close it, often has an interlock switch that failed and blew the main fuse. The hood blower's bearings wear and rattle, and steam from the cooktop below eventually wears out keypads. Taking it off the wall plate is a two-person job.
